The Plenary of the Federal Senate approved, this Tuesday (20/12), Bill 1.293/21, which modifies health defense legislation. It establishes a new model of agricultural inspection, based on self-control programs carried out by the companies themselves. The proposal goes to presidential sanction.

The rapporteur, senator Luis Carlos Heinze (PP-RS), rejected the amendments presented and highlighted the importance of approving the project. “The approval will provide for the modernization of the Brazilian agricultural inspection process,” he explained.

The project provides for the obligation of private agents to meet minimum criteria in expanding responsibilities in the production chain. In practice, the proposal allows the State to focus its actions on controlling and supervising higher risk activities, in addition to allowing greater dynamism and freedom for economic activities.

According to the proposal, private agents will develop self-control programs to guarantee the identity, quality and safety of their products. The program is not mandatory for primary agricultural production agents, but these producers may voluntarily join programs through a private production protocol.
