The 3rd edition of the Challenges of Brazilian Leadership in the World Soy Market Seminar will be held on November 18th and 19th, in digital and free format, to debate the main difficulties for the Brazilian soy production sector in the face of the international market. The seminar is promoted by Embrapa Soja, with the support of ABIOVE (Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries), ACEBRA (Association of Brazilian Cereal Companies), ANEC (National Association of Cereal Exporters), OCB (Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives) and Sindirações (National Union of the Animal Feed Industry).

According to researcher Marcelo Alvares de Oliveira, from Embrapa Soja, the event will discuss strategies to keep Brazil as a world leader in the soybean and derivatives market. “We will bring together different links from the productive and academic sector to advance important discussions that aim to prepare the sector to seek, guarantee and increase the competitiveness of the Brazilian soy production chain”, says the researcher.

ABIOVE, supporter of the event, recently projected record production and shipment of soybeans in Brazil in 2022. The estimated production of 144 million tons, of which more than 90 million tons are exported, positions the country, once again, as global leader in the soybean market. “To maintain this protagonism, it is essential to promote the technical debate on the quality of Brazilian soybeans,” said Daniel Amaral, chief economist at ABIOVE. This is precisely the objective of the Seminar. “More than volume, offering a quality product to the Brazilian and international oil and meal industry is vital to the sector’s competitiveness”, adds Daniel

The opening conference on the 18th, starting at 14pm, will be about the prospects for the Brazilian and world markets for high oleic acid or high protein soybeans. On the afternoon of the 18th, the following topics will also be discussed: the quality of Brazilian soybeans and how defects in soybeans impact the quality of oil and soybean meal. On the 19th, panels will be promoted on Good Agricultural Practices, Soy Traceability and Certification and also on Bran and Animal Feed.

Soybean

Soy is the main source of protein worldwide, used in industrialized products and animal feed. In 2020, Brazil produced 128 million tons of soybeans, on 37 million hectares. The country is the world's largest producer of soybeans and this production chain has a relevant impact on the economy, whether in the generation of foreign exchange, employment, income and improving quality of life. In 2020, domestic consumption (processing) of soybeans was approximately 47 million tons.

Export estimates from January to October are as follows:

  • Bran: US$6,2 billion / 14,3 million tons;
  • Oil: US$ 1,6 billion/ 1,3 million tons
  • Soybeans: US$ 36 billion/ 80,8 million tons
