Santa Catarina is expected to increase production of garlic, onions, oats and barley in the 2025/26 winter harvest. The exception is wheat, which shows a drop in projections. The data was released this Tuesday by the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning of Epagri (Epagri/Cepa).
The estimate takes into account information from market agents in key regions of the state. The numbers undergo statistical analysis and are discussed with researchers who monitor the markets.
The area planted with garlic is expected to grow by 12,7%, reaching 743 hectares. The estimated production will reach 7,8 thousand tons, an increase of 7,5%. The average yield is expected to fall by 5% after a previous harvest considered exceptional.
The national leader in onion production, Santa Catarina expects 19,5 thousand hectares to be planted, 1% more. Production should increase by 7,5%, reaching 594 thousand tons, with a 5,8% increase in productivity.
Oat production will expand by 2,4%, totaling 33 hectares. Productivity could increase by 13,1%. Expected production is 50 tons, representing a growth of 15,8%.
Barley, which has little representation in the state, should practically triple its planted area, with an increase of 177%. Production could reach 3 thousand tons, an increase of 115%. The crop is aimed at brewing malt, with technical support from the industries.
Wheat production is expected to decline. The planted area is expected to fall by 5,6%, to 116 thousand hectares. Estimated production is 407 thousand tons, 5,9% less. Productivity remains stable at around 3.500 kg/ha.
