Santa Catarina has its coldest winter since 2016

The winter of 2025 in Santa Catarina recorded the lowest temperatures since 2016, according to a preliminary study by Epagri/Ciram. The analysis took into account maximum and minimum temperature anomalies recorded at weather stations with longer historical records, from June to August. The most recent data considers measurements up to August 25th.

According to the survey, both minimum and maximum temperatures were below the climatological average in 2025, 2016, and 2011. This year, the highlight was the drop in maximum temperatures, with negative anomalies close to -1°C. In 2016, minimum temperatures were the most impacted, reaching -1,5°C below average.

The study also shows that in 2022, 2021, 2018, 2013, and 2010, temperatures remained close to or slightly below average. Conversely, in years like 2020, 2019, 2017, 2014, and 2012, temperatures were close to or slightly above the climatological average. In 2024, 2023, and 2015, winters were significantly warmer, with positive anomalies exceeding 1°C. These years coincided with the El Niño phenomenon, generally associated with higher temperatures and greater rainfall in Santa Catarina.
