The agricultural sector in São Paulo ended December 2024 with a negative balance of 12.951 formal jobs, according to data from the New General Register of Employed and Unemployed Workers (Novo Caged), analyzed in a report by the Economic Department of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of São Paulo (Faesp).
Despite the 2,7% drop in layoffs, the reduction in admissions was greater, at 19,6%, implying a negative balance. The result was a monthly shrinkage of 3,8% in the stock, which closed the month with 329.874 active formal jobs.
Among agricultural activities, orange cultivation recorded the largest loss of jobs (-4.977), followed by land preparation services (-2.438) and sugarcane cultivation (-2.037). These segments were the ones that contributed the most to the negative balance in the last month of the year.
Throughout the year, the agricultural sector recorded the elimination of 13.520 jobs in the state, being the only sector of the Economy to present a negative balance in the period.
At the national level, the agricultural sector also faced challenges in December, registering a negative balance of 46.672 jobs. However, throughout 2024, Brazilian agriculture created 10.808 new jobs, a balance 0,61% higher than in 2023.
