Wheat production in São Paulo reached 400 thousand tons in 2022, a record volume for the state. This data was verified during the last meeting of the São Paulo Wheat Sector Chamber, held on September 14th at the Capão Bonito Agricultural Cooperative, in Capão Bonito (SP).
At the time, the report from São Paulo cooperatives and cereal producers pointed to the largest volume of harvest that the state has produced in recent years, with the favorable climate at crucial moments for the development of wheat as one of the factors that allowed this result.
“We managed to meet expectations for the São Paulo harvest of 400 thousand tons of wheat production and we still hope to increase this quantity, with some data from producers, cooperatives and cereal growers that have not yet been recorded. The quality of São Paulo wheat has been maintained in recent years, despite bad weather in its production cycle, which indicates that we are on the right path”, highlights the President of the São Paulo Wheat Sector Chamber, Ruy Zanardi.
High quality of SP wheat
The record volume is positive news for the entire wheat chain in the state, considering that, in this way, the availability of quality flour is increased for sectors such as bakery, pasta, biscuits, pizzas, etc. The President of Sampapão (an acronym that brings together the Union, the Association of Bakery and Confectionery Industries of São Paulo and the Institute for the Development of Bakery and Confectionery of São Paulo), Rui Gonçalves, participated virtually in the meeting and assessed the condition of the São Paulo cereal for the segment.
“Over time, the quality of wheat and flour grew considerably in the state. Today, in São Paulo, we have good flour and good wheat, which means that the bakery has the power to produce excellent standard bread, allowing customers to observe the quality of the cereal used”, reinforces Gonçalves.
National and international wheat situation
The cereal situation in Brazil and the world were also topics of discussion during the Sector Chamber meeting. Wheat commercial analyst, Karina Hofling, and wheat division manager, Luciano Furlan, both professionals from ADM do Brasil, gave participants and spectators of the event an overview of the internal and external scenarios of the crop.
“We are working with a production of 10 million tons of wheat in Brazil. We believe that imports will reach six million tons, with the majority of this volume coming from Argentina, and foreign sales could reach three million tons, even with the limitation of the export window”, explains Karina.
According to Luciano Furlan, climate has been an important factor in determining the volume and quality of harvests around the world. “Argentina draws attention because it finds itself in a very different situation compared to last year. In 2022, due to the drought, only 17% of production is in good or excellent condition. Europe is also facing drought, with cereal volumes lower than expected. Pakistan, on the other hand, faced floods, affecting wheat in warehouses,” he explains.
