Robusta coffee exports grow 4,7% in May, says Cecafe

Brazilian exports of Robusta coffee increased by 4,7% in May this year, compared to the same month last year, reaching 484,1 thousand bags exported, which is equivalent to 16,3% of the share of exports per variety. Arabica coffee represented 73,8% of the total volume of coffee exported in the month, with 2,2 million bags shipped, showing a drop of 27,3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Instant coffee represented 9,9% of shipments, with the export of 296,1 thousand bags. The data was released today (10) by the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafe).

Considering the sum of green, soluble and roasted & ground coffee, Brazil exported 3 million bags of coffee in May this year, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$ 370,7 million. The average price of a bag was US$124,44, an increase of 5,2% compared to May 2019. 

From January to May 2020, Brazil exported 16,6 million bags of coffee, highlighting the 19,2% growth in Robusta coffee exports, which is equivalent to 1,5 million bags, compared to the previous year. same period last year. The foreign exchange revenue generated by exports in the period was US$2,2 billion and the average price was US$133,06, an increase of 4,8%.

According to the entity's monthly report, the main destination for Brazilian coffee continues to be the United States, which imported 3,3 million bags in the period, representing 19,8% of the share in total exports. Germany, the second largest consumer, imported 2,9 million, equivalent to 17,6% of the share. Italy, the third largest consumer, imported 1,5 million bags (8,8%). Next comes Belgium, with 1,1 million bags (6,9%); Japan, with 845,6 thousand bags (5,1%); Russian Federation, with 533,4 thousand bags (3,2%); Türkiye, with 491,5 thousand bags (3%); Spain, with 406,1 thousand bags (2,5%); Canada, with 362,9 thousand bags (2,2%); and France, with 323,4 thousand bags (2%).

Regarding differentiated coffees, those with superior quality or some certification of sustainable practices, Brazil exported 2,7 million bags, which represented 16,1% of the total shipped in the period and generated foreign exchange revenue of US$ 455,4 million , corresponding to 20,7% of the total generated from coffee export values ​​in the period. The average price of a bag of differentiated coffees was US$171,04.

The United States continues to be the country that receives the most differentiated coffees, with 498,5 thousand bags exported (equivalent to 18,7% share in the modality's exports), followed by Germany, with 359,9 thousand bags (13,5% ) and Belgium, with 324,6 thousand bags (12,2%). Next comes Japan, with 261,8 thousand (9,8%); Italy, with 201,8 thousand (7,6%); United Kingdom, with 111,6 thousand (4,2%); Spain, with 109,2 thousand bags (4,1%); Sweden, with 80,6 thousand bags (3,0%); Canada, with 76 thousand bags (2,9%); and South Korea, with 70,9 thousand bags (2,7%).

According to the president of Cecafé, Nelson Carvalhaes, the volumes exported in May showed a good performance, mainly taking into account the fact that the country is in the penultimate month of the end of the low cycle harvest and the world is going through a period of pandemic Covid-19.

According to Carvalhaes, it is important to highlight the efforts of the Brazilian coffee agribusiness chain, which has been using all available stocks to continue meeting global market demand.  

“In relation to sustainability, we emphasize the importance of preserving the health of everyone involved in the chain, from employees to consumers, through production, logistics, marketing and industry, strictly following the care and prevention measures, guided by the WHO [Organização Mundial of Health] and state and municipal health bodies”, he reinforced.
