Registration to participate in the Symposium on Agroforestry Systems with Cocoa – SSAF-Cacau are open. The event will be held in Ilhéus, Bahia, between November 30th and December 1st, 2022, in person. The SSAF-Cacau is carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), through the Executive Committee of the Cocoa Farming Plan (Ceplac), and the Brazil-Germany Cooperation for sustainable development (GIZ).
The objective of this Symposium is to promote the exchange of experiences and knowledge on the technological and sustainability aspects (economic, social and environmental) of agroforestry systems with cocoa trees, as a recommended sustainable agriculture model for this crop.
With free entry, 200 participants, including producers, researchers, professors of agricultural and environmental sciences, professionals linked to all segments of the cocoa production chain and postgraduate students will be able to register on the official website of the event. The Symposium will also be broadcast live on the date.
This event has the participation of several partners: Brazilian Society of Agroforestry Systems – SBSAF, Association of Cocoa Processing Industries – AIPC, Cocoa Innovation Center – CIC, Cocoa Action Brasil, Embrapa, UFSB (Federal University of Southern Bahia) and UESC (State University of Santa Cruz), in addition to renowned speakers specializing in the subject from several collaborating institutions.
Agroforestry Systems (SAF) are land use models where perennial, semi-perennial or annual plants are appropriately arranged in sequences or specific spatial models according to their requirements, in order to use, in a balanced way, the natural resources available in certain environment.
Furthermore, the use of SAF contributes to reversing soil degradation, increasing its fertility and moisture retention, increasing carbon sequestration and other environmental services, ensuring the diversification of products economically capable of generating employment and income, therefore, generating economic, social and ecological benefits.
In the case of cocoa, in addition to the traditional SAF cabruca, predominant in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, where the cocoa tree was planted under trees in the Atlantic Forest, in all producing regions, arrangements can be observed including the inclusion of perennial crops, such as rubber tree, açaí, coconut, peach palm, or with timber forest species. These systems, in addition to the ecosystem benefits, diversify economic activities within the property, in order to increase profitability per unit area and minimize the risks of loss of income due to fortuitous weather events or adverse market conditions.
