RS 2024/25 Harvest: rains alleviate water stress in soybeans and corn
Phytosanitary conditions require intensified monitoring
Heavy rains recorded in January in Brazil's main producing regions impacted the development of soybean, corn and rice crops. The information is from Conab.
While the Center-North of the country and Matopiba received rainfall that favored the sowing and growth of crops, some areas faced excess humidity, making maturation and harvesting difficult.
In the South and in parts of Mato Grosso do Sul, low rainfall resulted in water restrictions, affecting crop development.
In Mato Grosso, the harvest is just beginning, but high soil moisture is compromising grain maturation. In Paraná, 10% of the area has already been harvested, with crops at different stages of development. In Rio Grande do Sul, the lack of moisture has hampered plant growth, especially in the regions of Missões, Alto Uruguai, Campanha and Fronteira Oeste.
In Bahia, planting has been completed and crops are still developing, but excess moisture has favored pathogen attacks. In Goiás, harvesting has begun in irrigated areas, but the rains are making it difficult to desiccate and dry the grains. Mato Grosso do Sul is showing good general conditions, despite water stress in some areas. Minas Gerais has begun harvesting in irrigated crops, but the rains require greater disease control.
In Maranhão, rainfall limited the progress of sowing, while in Piauí and Pará, planting is in the final phase, with good conditions for the crops planted.
In Minas Gerais, the rains favored planting and crop development, but also increased humidity and the incidence of pests. In Paraná, the harvest has begun, but the rains have limited its progress. In Rio Grande do Sul, around 25% of the area has already been harvested, with occasional losses due to drought at the end of 2024. In Santa Catarina, the harvest is progressing slowly and excessive heat is damaging later crops.
In Bahia, sowing is almost complete, but pests and diseases are impacting productivity. In Piauí, recent rains have improved crop conditions. In São Paulo, harvesting has begun, but the priority has been soybean harvesting. Pará and Goiás have made good progress in sowing and are in good general crop conditions.
In Rio Grande do Sul, irrigated crops are developing well, but the reduction in water reservoirs requires intermittent irrigation. In Santa Catarina, development has been favored by solar radiation, despite high water consumption and occasional impacts of cold weather. Maranhão has made progress in harvesting irrigated rice and expanded planting of dryland rice with the recent rains.
Goiás is progressing with the harvest with good productivity, despite rain during the operation. In Mato Grosso, sowing has been completed and the harvest is underway in irrigated areas. In Tocantins, the crops are still filling with grains. In Paraná, the harvest has reached 20% of the area, with most of the irrigated rice showing satisfactory development.
The climate situation continues to influence crop performance in different states, requiring producers to pay attention to adjustments in management strategies.
