RS ports register movement of more than 30 million tons in 2024

The Port of Rio Grande concentrated the largest number of ships, representing 81.78% of the state's total

Between January and September 2024, 2.667 vessels passed through the ports of Rio Grande do Sul. The Port of Rio Grande concentrated the largest number of vessels, representing 81.78% of the state's total (2.181). Together, the three public ports in Rio Grande do Sul handled 31.845.816 tons.

Solid bulk continues to account for the largest number of cargoes handled, totaling 19.876.676 tons. The second largest group is general cargo, which reached 9.761.718 tons. Liquid bulk appears in third place, with the movement of 2.207.422 tons.

During this period, the Port of Rio Grande recorded increases in specific cargo. Wood chip shipping operations had a positive variation of 10.11%, reaching 812.483 tons. Pulp showed an increase of 6.32% and handled 2.807.633 tons.

Next comes wheat, with an increase of 6.19% and movement of 2.523.760 tons. Soybeans in grains varied positively by 2.57% and moved the equivalent of 7.260.303 tons in the ten months of the year. Potassium chloride, one of the inputs for the production of fertilizers, grew by 2.34% and reached 1.275.082 tons.

Container movement was another modality that also showed an increase in relation to the same period last year. In total, there were 580.735 TEUs, a number that includes full and empty units. This quantity includes transport via the waterway from the Santa Clara terminal, which highlights the importance of this mode.

Imports come from China (1.179.106t), Argentina (1.132.007t), Russia (608.863t), Morocco (568.649t) and Canada (470.820t). Exports via the Port of Rio Grande are destined for China (7.393.301t), Vietnam (880.674t), Iran (854.959t), the Philippines (727.876t) and the United States (706.197t).

In Pelotas, movements total 860.695 tons, with wood as the main product (736.028 tons). Clinker, which is cement in its raw manufacturing phase, appears in second place (116.291 tons) and soybeans complete the list of goods, reaching a movement of 8.376 tons.

At the Port of Porto Alegre, inputs for fertilizer production account for the largest share of movements, reaching 225.333 tons. Next come wheat (182.084 tons), barley (57.742 tons), beef tallow (25.877 tons), salt (20.634 tons) and general cargo (2.309 tons). Together, these cargoes total 513.979 tons.
