After around 10 years of studies at the State Center for Diagnostics and Research on Family Farming (Ceafa) of the Department of Agricultural Diagnostics and Research (DDPA), located in Maquiné, the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi) Recently registered a new bean cultivar with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), RS Gaúcho. The name is a tribute to the people of Rio Grande do Sul. The new cultivar belongs to the black commercial group, the most consumed in Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the study coordinator, researcher Juliano Bertoldo, the RS Gaúcho cultivar is an improvement in relation to other cultivars, such as Fepagro 26 and Fepagro Triunfo. “The average productivity presented by the RS Gaúcho cultivar (2308 kg per hectare) is higher than the national (1.110 kg per hectare) and state average (1.484 kg per hectare) by around 60% and by around 6% in grain yield in compared to the average number of very productive commercial witnesses”, explains Bertoldo. “In addition, the productive potential was above 3.000 kg per hectare, obtained in some regions and under the conditions under which it was evaluated”, he adds.
He highlights that, in addition to high productivity, due to its more upright posture, it can be an excellent income option for farmers. “Its cultivation is recommended for the various cultivation systems recommended by official research for bean cultivation in Rio Grande do Sul, in the harvest and off-season periods, in rainfed or irrigated crops, in direct or conventional planting, single or intercropped, conventional or organic”, points out Bertoldo.
The next phases are insertion into agricultural climate risk zoning and multiplication of seeds, which will be sold from 2024 on demand. Furthermore, the Secretariat expects that another cultivar from the Rio commercial group will be submitted for registration this year.
