Plants "talk" to each other
Tel Aviv University research shows that plants emit specific sounds, potentially audible to animals and insects
This year, Rio Grande do Sul allowed the harvest and sale of pine nuts from this Saturday (1st/04), according to state law (No. 15.915, of 22/12/22), as was already happening in the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. Serra Gaúcha is the largest producer of pine nuts in the State, especially the regions of Campos de Cima da Serra and Hortênsias, where the product is important in generating income or even supporting family production units that work with seed extraction.
According to a survey carried out by Emater/RS-Ascar extension agents, as occurred in previous years, pine nut production in the Serra region in 2023 is expected to vary between municipalities. Initial estimates point to a harvest similar to last year or with a 10 to 30% reduction in production. According to forestry engineer Adelaide Ramos, extensionist at Emater/RS-Ascar, this is due to the climatic conditions that occurred during the development period of the pine cones, especially the droughts that have been recurring in recent years, combined with the alternation of production, which is a characteristic of the species.
In the Serra region, the earliest varieties are maturing and threshing, and the latest varieties are in seed development. Pine cones and pine nuts have good quality and health and are medium in size.
All harvesting is manual and the production chain has few processing, industrialization and storage initiatives, with sales being concentrated in the period from April to June.
The minimum price paid to pine nut extractors this year, according to the Mapa Ordinance (nº 534, of 19/12/22), is R$ 4,05/Kg.
