Pernambuco agribusiness exports reached the mark of US$ 147,5 million in the accumulated period from January to April 2021, which corresponds to a growth of 56% compared to the same period of the previous year. This is a new record in relation to the first four months of the last eight years, according to an analysis by the Agriculture Federation of the State of Pernambuco (Faepe).

The main products exported in these first four months were sugar (US$ 70,5 million), alcohol (US$ 13,9 million), mangoes (US$ 24,4 million), grapes (US$ 16,5 million) and juices (US$5,3 million). These five items represented 88,5% of Pernambuco's agricultural exports in the period.

According to the president of Faepe, Pio Guerra, once again sugar cane strengthens the state economy. “With an attractive exchange rate and favorable market, the sugarcane chain was able to demonstrate its efficiency, diversifying its purchasing countries”, he highlighted.

Regarding fruit growing, the president assessed that, even with positive numbers, the activity will - as usual, have an even more impressive performance in the next four months.

Export destinations

The main buyers of Pernambuco sugar were countries in Africa and the Middle East, notably Senegal (US$21,6 million) and Lebanon (US$9,6 million). While the largest portion of the alcohol sold went to Mexico (US$ 3,1 million) and Colombia (US$ 2,6 million).

In fruit growing, we can also observe differences in destinations between products. Sales to Spain (US$10,8 million) and the Netherlands (US$9 million) represented 81% of the value obtained from mango exports. The grape's main buyer was the United States (US$ 10,9 million).

The Federation's analysis is based on data from official government bodies.
