Brazil accumulates 1,7 million bags of coffee without shipment in 2024
Logistics bottlenecks continue to hinder exporters, who have accumulated extra port costs of R$6,986 million
Between the months of January and October, the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina handled 57.633.026 tons of goods, representing an 8% growth compared to the same period last year, which was 53.360.117 tons.
“We are continually improving our infrastructure, investing in expanding our capacity and in management. The result of this is constant growth in productivity. We are currently the ports with the best port management in the country and we work hard to maintain the high level of quality required by the market,” stated the CEO of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.
The commodity with the largest volume in the period was soybeans, with 12.851.300 tons exported in 2024, 4% higher than in the same period in 2023 (12.401.832). Soybeans are used as raw material for industries in various segments, ranging from food to cosmetics and plastics.
The second commodity with the largest volume was fertilizers, with 8.960.380 tons imported this year. Last year, 7.908.320 tons were moved between January and October, an increase of 13%. The ports of Paraná are the main route for the entry of this commodity into the country, representing 24% of the national movement.
The third largest segment was containers, with 1.306.395 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) handled in both import and export, representing a growth of 20% compared to 31 (2023 TEUs). Temperature-controlled containers lead the movement, driven by the strong demand for frozen meat from the Middle East.
“We also have to consider the increased demand for containerized cargo at our container terminal, which is the most qualified in South America in terms of handling capacity. We had more than 1,3 million TEUs handled by the end of October, an excellent result so far,” said Operations Director Gabriel Vieira.
Exports and imports – imports through the ports of Paraná were the highlight of the period. In total, 22.095.672 tons were handled between January and October 2024, compared to the 18.161.339 tons registered last year, which represents a growth of 22%. Exports grew by 1% in the period, going from 35.198.778 tons in 2023 to 35.537.354 tons in 2024.
