Massey Ferguson unveils tractor that completed desert rally at Agritechnica 2025
Adapted agricultural model becomes the first tractor in history to complete the test.
New Holland is showcasing its new line of autonomous robots for specialty crops at Agritechnica. The R4 series includes two models: an electric one for vineyards and a hybrid one for orchards. This innovation aims to meet the needs of producers affected by labor shortages and the demand for more sustainable agricultural systems.
Developed in partnership by teams from Italy and France, the R4 performs repetitive tasks such as mowing, harrowing, and spraying. These operations do not require constant human presence. Control is done via an app, with the aid of GPS, LIDAR, and vision cameras.
Without a cabin and built from scratch, the R4 robot was designed using technologies already existing in the brand's product line. The autonomous system is the same used in tractors and grain harvesters, which facilitates upgrades and maintenance.
Both models feature rubber tracks with suspension, which reduce soil compaction. The traction system is electric and continuous. The implements operate without hydraulic oil, which reduces weight, emissions, and maintenance costs.
The R4 Electric Power model is fully electric. It has a 40kWh battery capacity. It weighs one ton and operates in spacings of 1,0 to 1,5 meters. It measures 0,7 meters wide and reaches 1,38 meters in height. The compact hitch system lifts up to 500 kg and powers implements with electric energy.
The R4 Hybrid Power was developed for fruit growers. It weighs 1.400 kg and measures 1,2 meters wide, focusing on spacings starting from 1,5 meters. The 59 hp diesel engine is compatible with biofuels. It powers a 44kW electric generator. In specific situations, the robot can operate in 100% electric mode with 4kWh batteries. The model has an electric hitch, a 540rpm mechanical PTO with intelligent clutch, and a 48V/12kW electrical outlet.
Both models include intelligent spraying technologies. They control the product flow and stop application in planting gaps or at the edges. They also adjust the spraying according to the canopy height. The company is also developing a localized application system based on disease detection.
