Bayer welcomes a science-based discussion with regulators around the world, the international research community, as well as consumers about the safety profile of glyphosate. To this end, all 107 Bayer glyphosate safety study reports that were submitted to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as part of the substance authorization process in the European Union (EU) are now accessible on the Bayer transparency. In doing so, the company delivers on its commitment to greater transparency, including its crop protection safety studies following the Monsanto acquisition. Many of these and similar studies were submitted to and evaluated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during its own glyphosate risk assessment.
“Transparency is a catalyst for trust, so more transparency is a good thing for consumers, policymakers and businesses. As an innovation company, safety is our top priority and we are fully committed to doing everything we can to ensure that our products are safe for people and the environment,” said Bayer AG Board Member and President from Bayer AG. Division of Cultural Sciences, Liam Condon. “By making our detailed scientific safety data available, we encourage anyone to see for themselves how comprehensive our approach to safety is. We embrace the opportunity to engage in dialogue so that we can build more trust in science.”
This new addition to the Bayer Transparency platform follows the publication in December last year of more than 300 summaries of glyphosate safety studies submitted under the EU substance authorization process for plant protection products. Access has now been enabled for all detailed glyphosate safety studies related to which Bayer holds the rights.
Due to legal restrictions, Bayer cannot disclose glyphosate studies carried out and owned by third parties.
Bayer stands behind the safety of glyphosate and will continue to vigorously defend its glyphosate products. The company is working diligently to ensure the conversation about glyphosate is accurate and will continue to share information about the strong body of science confirming that glyphosate and glyphosate-based products are safe when used as directed, and that it does not cause cancer.
About the Bayer Transparency Initiative
In 2017, Bayer made a voluntary commitment to transparency, setting a new standard with the Bayer Transparency Platform. The company has made its safety data, which was previously only shared with regulatory bodies, available to the general public in order to connect with the scientific community, build trust, and promote an open, science-based dialogue about plant protection products. To date, Bayer has published information about 28 active ingredients on its transparency website.
