This week, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, participated in the 14th edition of the Brazilian Cotton Congress, in Fortaleza (CE). Promoted by the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa) and with the theme “Brazilian cotton in focus: perspectives of the international market”, the event highlighted Brazil's crucial role in the global market, discussing the trends and challenges that will shape the future of the sector in the coming years.
During the event, Minister Carlos Fávaro and the president of Abrapa, Alexandre Schenkel, signed the term of recognition of the Responsible Brazilian Cotton (ABR) program.
“This certificate that we signed provides public recognition. All producers with the ABR certificate will have a discount of half a percent on the interest rates of the Safra Plan. It is recognition for the work done by you,” explained Fávaro.
The minister took the opportunity to emphasize the government's commitment to boosting the sector, highlighting the opening of 181 new markets for Brazilian agricultural products in 58 destinations since the beginning of 2023. “Among them, the Egyptian market was opened for Brazilian cotton, something long awaited by our producers. Everyone knows the prestige of Egyptian cotton; by selling to them, we now have the same recognition,” he added.
Fávaro also recalled that, in May of this year, Brazil became the largest cotton exporter in the world. He highlighted that, in addition to good trade relations, this result is due to Brazil's commitment to health and the dedication of producers. “We have become the largest cotton exporter, as a result of the work and competence of Brazilian producers. The government is committed to ensuring more and more opportunities for the sector. We have a very high sanitary standard, which allows us to access more demanding markets,” he stated.
Brazil is the world's largest exporter and third largest producer of cotton. In the first seven months of this year, cotton exports reached US$3,13 billion, totaling 1,6 million tons, an increase of 190% compared to the same period last year.
The main destinations were China (US$ 1,17 billion), Vietnam (US$ 534 million) and Bangladesh (US$ 373 million). In 2023, the total traded was US$ 3,33 billion, corresponding to 1,6 million tons.
