The month of May this year ends as the best May in the historical series in terms of new trade agreements in the world market for Brazilian agribusiness products. According to a report from the Secretariat of Commerce and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), in the last 31 days, 15 new markets have been opened in 10 different countries.

The performance surpasses the previous record, recorded in May 2020, with eight openings in five countries. Last year, the same month saw the opening of seven new markets in seven nations, contributing to the historic mark of 78 new markets in 39 countries throughout 2023. During President Lula's third term there are already 124 in 51 countries.

May is also considered the best month this year, surpassing March with 10 new markets, January with nine, February with seven and April with five. During the year, 46 new markets were registered in 27 countries, with emphasis on: fish for South Africa, Australia and India; poultry meat for El Salvador and Lesotho; pork to Bhutan; green coffee for Zambia; between others.

The 2024 openings already cover all continents: Africa (5) - South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, Lesotho and Zambia; Asia (12) - Saudi Arabia, Armenia, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Philippines, India, Oman, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Singapore and Turkey; Europe (3) - Great Britain, Belarus and Russia; Oceania (1) - Australia; and Americas (6) - Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, United States, Mexico and Peru.

“The opening of new markets is a testimony to the competitiveness and reliability of the Brazilian productive sector, recognized in more than 200 countries and territories. This result is the result of the joint work of many, under the leadership of Ministers Carlos Fávaro and Mauro Vieira, especially our agricultural attaches in bilateral trade negotiations. It is important to remember that 65% of the openings of this administration occurred in positions where we have attachés. And there are still many more records to come”, highlighted the Secretary of Commerce and International Relations, Roberto Perosa.

The expansion of international markets has been an important factor in the growth of Brazilian exports. In the first four months of the year, agribusiness played a key role, representing 49,3% of the country's total exports. The revenue generated by the sector in the four months reached the mark of US$ 52,39 billion, a growth of 3,7% in relation to the US$ 50,52 billion exported in the same period of the previous year.

These results are the result of joint work between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).
