The rains that occurred in March in Mato Grosso do Sul were beneficial for second-crop crops, as shown by data from the seventh estimate of the 2021/22 grain harvest, released by the National Supply Company (Conab), this week. According to the study, the weekly rainfall that occurred in the last month, with an approximate spacing of five days between rains, eliminated water stress points in the state and also favored the evolution of agricultural operations for harvesting soybeans and sowing corn.

The rains interspersed with sunny days did not affect the soybean harvest, allowing 99% of the crops to be removed from the production fields by April 01st, without compromising the quality of the grains due to excess moisture. The state's final average productivity (2.520 kg/ha) was harmed by water deficits that occurred from December 2021 and lasted until the end of February this year in the center-south of the state.

Corn

According to the bulletin, corn crops, the 2nd harvest of the cereal, which had a troubled start to development in February, in the southwest and east regions, due to the low moisture available in the soil in that period, recovered and have been showing excellent vegetative development. .

The good behavior of the climate also allowed the 2,16 million hectares of corn cultivated in the 2nd harvest in the state to be sown within the period recommended by the Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning (ZARC), which reduces the future risks of bad weather in production.

Sorghum

Another grain that gained expression in the production area of Mato Grosso do Sul and which also benefited from the rains is sorghum. The cultivated area increased from 27,5 thousand ha in the last harvest to 70 thousand ha in the 2021/2022 cycle. The expansion is due to the plant's rusticity compared to corn and the possibility of sowing until April 20 in some municipalities.
