Monitoring of the 2025/2026 second corn crop in Mato Grosso do Sul indicates that 70,6% of the crops are showing good development conditions. The data comes from the Geographic Information System for Agribusiness (Siga-MS), implemented by the Mato Grosso do Sul Soybean and Corn Producers Association (Aprosoja/MS).

According to the survey, 18,4% of the areas are in fair condition and 11% were classified as poor. The current estimate points to a cultivated area of 2,206 million hectares, with an expected average productivity of 84,2 sacks per hectare and a total estimated production of 11,139 million tons.

According to the technical coordinator of Aprosoja/MS, Gabriel Balta, crop conditions vary according to rainfall distribution and the planting window adopted in different regions of the state. “The northern, northeastern, and western regions currently have the best crop indices in good condition. Areas in the central, southern, and southern border regions, however, register a higher percentage of crops in fair and poor condition, mainly due to irregular weather patterns and the risk of drought and frost,” he explains.

The planting of the second corn crop began in the third week of January and was completed in the last week of April, totaling 16 weeks of operation. According to the survey, 78,8% of the estimated area was sown between the second week of February and the third week of March.

Climate impacts

Another point monitored by Aprosoja/MS is the climatic impacts recorded in May. Municipalities such as Deodápolis, Fátima do Sul, Juti, Ivinhema and Dourados experienced hail, affecting approximately 2,1 hectares of crops.

"The damage caused by the hail was localized, but it is being monitored by the Aprosoja/MS technical team to assess the productive impacts in the affected areas," Gabriel points out.

The survey also indicates that the current second corn crop should occupy approximately 46% of the area destined for soybeans in Mato Grosso do Sul, a percentage lower than the 75% recorded in previous years. According to Aprosoja/MS, the reduction is related to the limitations imposed by the planting window defined by the Agricultural Zoning of Climatic Risk (ZARC), in addition to the adoption of alternative crops in areas more susceptible to climatic risks.

Among the main pests observed in the crops are the corn leafhopper, fall armyworm, aphids, stink bugs, as well as diseases such as cercospora leaf spot, bipolar leaf spot, and helminthosporium leaf spot.
