Measures adopted by Brazil to strengthen agricultural sustainability were the topic of yet another submission articulated in partnership by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) and the Global Policies Center (POLG) of the Secretariat of Intelligence and Strategic Relations (Sire) , and approved by the United Nations (UN).

The initiative responds to the need for dialogue on land and oceans and to reinforce actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change. According to researcher Gustavo Mozzer, this was one of the themes agreed upon during the UN Climate Conference (COP25), chaired by the Chilean government, but held in Madrid, Spain, in December 2019.

Among the main decisions of COP25, countries should submit contributions by March 31st to the dialogues scheduled to take place in October this year, during the next meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the SB52 Convention.

According to Mozzer, Embrapa's participation in the preparation of Brazilian contributions sent and approved by the UN reinforces the Company's recognition and expertise in climate change. “This is a topic that has mobilized researchers from practically all Units and, under the coordination of the Climate Change Portfolio, has consolidated Embrapa as a reference institution”, he says. “All the scientific knowledge generated by decades of research in the area of tropical agriculture provides support for work in the area of climate change to assess risks and propose technological solutions appropriate to the current scenario and prospecting future scenarios.”

For the researcher, Embrapa has actively contributed to the advancement of Brazilian agriculture, through scientific studies capable of proposing strategies to face the challenges posed by climate change, with potential for adoption in other countries. Submissions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in his opinion, are a tool to publicize the potential and sustainability of the tropical agricultural model and technology developed in Brazil.

The Brazilian contribution on the topic was the result of coordination between Embrapa and Mapa, through the Department of Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Depros) of the Secretariat of Innovation, Rural Development and Irrigation (SDI), of the Secretariat of Commerce and International Relations ( SCRI), the Socio-Environmental Affairs Advisory of the minister's office and the Commission for Sustainable Development of Agriculture (CDSA).

Forwarded by Itamaraty to the UNFCCC, the document is available here.
