inmet
The forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) for the month of July indicates above-average rain in the northern part of the North Region, isolated areas in the east of the Northeast, Southeast and South regions (blue tones on the map in figure 1a). In a large part of the Central-West and Southeast regions, south of the North Region, interior of the Northeast Region and west of the South Region, rain is forecast close to and below the climatological average (gray and yellow tones on the map in figure 1a). It should be noted that the reduction in rainfall in much of Brazil at this time of year is due to the persistence of dry air masses, which causes a decrease in relative air humidity, which consequently favors an increase in the incidence of fires and fires. forestry, in addition to the increase in respiratory diseases.
Considering Inmet's climate forecast for July 2024 and its possible impacts on the main crops, with the forecast reduction in rainfall in a large part of Brazil, this could reduce soil moisture levels, especially in Matopiba (area which covers the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) and the Center-West and Southeast regions, in addition to the center-north of Paraná. This scenario could cause water restrictions for second-crop corn crops in the reproductive stage and wheat in development.
On the other hand, the lack of rain in the interior of the Northeast and Central-West Region may favor the maturation and harvest of cotton, and sugar cane and coffee in the Southeast Region. Attention should be paid to the forecast of above-average rain in areas in the east of the South Region, mainly the northeast of Rio Grande do Sul, which has been hit by heavy rains in recent months, and which could still make wheat sowing difficult.
Temperature
As for temperatures, the forecast indicates that they should be above average in the central-north part of the country, mainly on the southern border of Pará with Mato Grosso and Tocantins (orange tones on the map in figure 1b), due to the reduction in rainfall, with the possibility of some days of excessive heat in some locations, where average temperatures could exceed 26ºC.
In specific areas in the north of the Central-West and Southeast regions, in addition to the interior of the Northeast, temperatures should be close to or slightly below average (gray and blue tones on the map in figure 1b), varying between 20ºC and 22ºC.
In the South Region, above-average values are predicted in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, while, in a large part of Rio Grande do Sul, temperatures are expected to remain close to and slightly below average (gray and blue tones on the map of figure 1b). In higher altitude areas of the south and southeast regions, temperatures close to or below 14ºC are expected. Furthermore, the occurrence of frost in some locations in these regions cannot be ruled out, due to the entry of cold air masses that can cause a drop in temperature, which is very common at this time of year.
