Italian production of machinery and components for agriculture and landscaping reached its highest value ever in 2023, with revenue reaching €16,4 billion. The result was mainly driven by the increase in list prices, a consequence of inflation and rising raw material costs. The president of the "Federazione Nazionale Costruttori Macchine Agricole" (FederUnacoma), Mariateresa Maschio, explained these data during the annual assembly held this afternoon (25/6) at Palazzo Albergati, in Bologna.

The distribution of values by product sectors is varied. The tractor segment reached a value of €2,7 billion, registering an increase of 13% compared to the previous year, even with a production of 51 thousand units, a drop of 6,6%. The operational equipment and machinery sector reached €7,4 billion, an increase of 5,4%. Production of incomplete tractors and tractor parts generated €1,4 billion, marking an increase of 7,7%.

Components for agricultural machinery contributed €4 billion in revenue, with growth of 5,2%. The only segment that did not show an increase in revenue was machinery and equipment for gardening and landscaping, totaling €900 million, a drop of 5,3%.

Role of exports

Exports played a crucial role in the sector's results, representing approximately 70% of the value of Italian production. The categories of tractors, agricultural machinery and incomplete tractors registered by the "Istituto Nazionale di Statistica” (ISTAT) indicate an export value of €8 billion, an increase of 9,8%, with a trade surplus of €5,8 billion. This surplus is further strengthened by the significant share of exports of components and machinery for gardening and landscaping.

"The geography of our exports still shows a clear predominance of the European Union” (EU), explained Mariateresa Maschio. "The EU absorbs 63% of tractors manufactured in Italy, with another 16% being absorbed by European countries outside the bloc. Regarding other types of machines, the EU absorbs 51% of our production, while other European countries account for a further 14%,” she added.

When analyzing countries individually, Italy's main trading partner for tractors is France, with a value of €344 million, followed by Germany, Turkey and the United States. For other types of machines, the United States stands out as the main market, followed by France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
