More expensive coffee: climate challenges affect 25/26 harvest
Brazilian production faces challenges, while coffee is already weighing more heavily on consumers' pockets
In the extreme northwest of Paraná, where rainfall is irregular, irrigation has been a decisive factor in ensuring the viability of agricultural production. At Fazenda Estrela e Monte Azul, located in Icaraíma, 60 km from Umuarama, the adoption of this technology has allowed for increased productivity and increased crop profitability.
With a total area of 2.600 acres, the property allocates 100 acres for soybean cultivation under irrigation, using three central pivots. According to administrator Alexandre Rios, this practice has guaranteed an average productivity of between 160 and 180 bags per bushel. In comparison, areas without irrigation register only 50 bags per bushel, highlighting the direct impact of water availability on production.
The technology also benefits the cultivation of corn in succession to soybeans, with averages ranging from 250 to 280 bags per bushel. "Without irrigation, there is no economic viability," says Rios, highlighting that the farm plans to expand the system to also serve pastures and cattle confinement, ensuring food for the herd during the winter.
In addition to agricultural production, the farm maintains a herd of 10 head of cattle, 5 of which are fattened in confinement. The animals, of the Nelore breed and from a mixed herd, enter the system weighing between 400 and 450 kilos and, after 80 to 90 days, reach 550 kilos, with average gains of up to 1,8 kg per day. The meat is destined for the foreign market.
The adoption of irrigation on the property began in 2020, with an investment that was paid off during the pandemic, driven by the appreciation of soybeans on the market. "It was worth it, and now we are planning to expand," says Rios. He emphasizes that the technology, in addition to ensuring productivity, adds value to the land.
With rising temperatures and more frequent periods of drought, irrigation has become a strategic solution for maintaining the competitiveness of agricultural production in the region.
