Research addresses socio-environmental certification of soy in Maranhão
The expansion of soybean production has been marked by the incorporation of new areas in agricultural frontier regions, especially in the Matopiba region
Started in September, the planting of the 2018/19 soybean harvest in Brazil is progressing and reaches 10% of the planned area, according to AgRural consultancy. In the state of Santa Catarina, the planting of the soybean and corn crop is expanding due to rainfall levels. This is a particularity derived from El Niño, a climatic phenomenon that accompanies the 18/19 harvest, and which should benefit soybean cultivation in the south of the country, according to the Association of Soybean and Corn Producers of the State of Santa Catarina (Aprosoja /SC).
For the harvest to be profitable, it is important that the producer pays attention to the seed that is being planted, therefore, the treatment of this grain needs to be of reliable origin and, for this to occur, in a safe and efficient way, one of the indications is that investment is made through the protection of seeds through industrial treatment, from cooperatives, distributors and seed companies. "The TSI machines – Industrial Seed Treatment – present technology and quality, characteristics passed on to the input. Thus, the rural producer who acquires it receives security, convenience and confidence, in addition to optimizing time and resources due to savings, mainly on labor costs. This is the system known as open and plant", explains Abdalah Novaes, regional director at Bayer.
Cooperativism, by offering technological machinery, expands the organization's source of income and brings innovation to all producers who are members of the cooperative. In Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, cities such as Canoinhas, Lagoa Vermelha and Não-me-Toque already have cooperatives and input distributors that provide treated seeds to members. "This business system is designed to provide infrastructure to the cooperative member, because when purchasing the already treated seed, they can be sure that during planting there will be productivity and greater security regarding the grains' response to the incidence of pests and diseases", he points out. the executive.
"Cities like Dom Pedrito and Santa Maria, both in Rio Grande do Sul, have just received industrial seed treatment machines. For 2019, we are already designing several other projects to expand this Bayer technology throughout the state. This is an investment by company so that the producer from Rio Grande do Sul is increasingly supported by technology and increasingly closer to farming facilitators. In other words, the more the producer trusts in the seed he buys, the more he will be able to have time to worry about other aspects of the field, such as post-harvest and crop profitability", concludes Abdalah.
