The advantages of the cotton cultivar BRS 368 RF will be presented in two field days in the municipalities of Iguatu and Quixeramobim (CE) on the 18th and 19th of July. The action is promoted by Embrapa, Secretariat for Agrarian Development (SDA), Ematerce and Instituto Agropolos.

The researcher at Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, Raimundo Braga, explains that the variety tolerates the herbicide Glyphosate and, therefore, can be cultivated with less equipment required to control weeds.

The field days are part of a set of actions to revitalize cotton farming in Ceará. One of the main initiatives was the installation of seven technology demonstration units in the municipalities of Iguatu, Acopiara, Senador Pompeu, Quixeramobim, Quixadá and Choró.

SDA consultant Vinícius Assunção argues that with the adoption of available technologies it is possible to strengthen culture in Ceará. He recalls that the state has the second largest textile park in the country, but that it is supplied with raw materials from other states, mainly Bahia and Mato Grosso, at high logistics costs.

The initiative is supported by the Federation of Industries of Ceará (Fiec), the Development Agency of the State of Ceará (Adece), the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Ceará (Faec) and the National Rural Learning Service (Senar).

Learn more: developed by Embrapa Algodão and partners, BRS 368 RF is a transgenic cultivar resistant to the herbicide glyphosate, with a fiber yield of 40% and productive potential between 4.200 and 4.500 kg/ha, suitable for cultivation in the first harvest (rain-fed) in the states of MS, MT, GO and BA and second harvest (irrigated) in the State of BA. Cultivar of low size and medium to early cycle, with the first flower opening at 55 days and a total cycle of 165 to 170 days. As it is resistant to glyphosate, it offers greater flexibility in weed control, allowing application at any stage of crop development without the need to use non-selective herbicide sprays in a directed jet. Resistant to common mosaic and cotton bacteriosis and moderately resistant to blue disease.
