Hass avocado exports expected to grow in 2025

The Agricultural Defense Coordination (CDA) of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply (SAA) through its Plant Health Defense Center (CDSV) will, through inspection actions, from 2025, apply measures to guarantee the export of the Hass variety avocado to Chile and also to Japan. The decision comes after agreements made between the National Phytosanitary Protection Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) and the respective agencies of the importing countries.

“The expectation is that in 2025, exports of the Hass variety of avocados will increase and, considering that the State of São Paulo is the largest Brazilian producer, it is expected that this niche of fruit growing will contribute to the increase in the state's GDP”, comments Cristina Abi Rachedlost, agricultural engineer and manager of the State Programs for Phytosanitary Certification and Export of Plant Products.

To meet the requirements of the countries that will receive the fruit from next year, phytosanitary measures will be adopted to prevent the introduction of pests that are absent in both territories.

Among the measures planned are the implementation of risk mitigation management for the fruit borer - Stenoma catenifer - for exports to Chile and the control and monitoring of fruit ripening stages, aiming to avoid the introduction of the Mediterranean fly - Ceratitis capitata - in Japan.

“Since these are ongoing measures that require field monitoring, the Phytosanitary Certification of Origin will be the basis for compliance with the requirements. The Agricultural Defense will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the requirements imposed to make certified shipments possible,” highlights Cristina.

The inspection procedures for Chile have already been finalized and the properties have already started registering with the Regional Agricultural Defense Offices to comply with the deadlines set forth in the requirements. The necessary documents and procedures are already available on the CDA website.

Regarding the procedures for exporting to Japan, Cristina informs that they are being finalized and that in January, they will be defined and available to interested parties.
