Harvest intensification puts pressure on the value of Robusta coffee in May

The harvest of the 2022/23 Robusta coffee harvest picked up pace in May, especially in the second fortnight. Data collected from Cepea employees indicate that 40 to 50% of the expected total had been harvested in Rondônia by the end of last month. In Espírito Santo, the volume harvested is between 15 and 25% of the total.

In general, the quantity of new coffee available in the national spot is still low, as most sellers remain away from negotiations. Even so, prices for the variety fell in May. Between April 29th and May 31st, the CEPEA/ESALQ Indicator type 6, sieve 13 above, fell 83,73 Reais/sc (-10,57%), closing at R$708,25/sc this Tuesday , 31.

In addition to the pressure from the harvest, the external values ​​of Robusta also fell for part of the month, influencing domestic prices.

For arabica, prices fluctuated strongly in May. At the beginning of the month, values ​​were pressured by technical movements, uncertainties related to global demand and the start of the 2022/23 harvest.

In the second week of May, prices rose, driven by corrections and concerns about the arrival of a strong cold wave in Brazil, with the possibility of frost. Between April 29th and May 31st, the CEPEA/ESALQ Indicator for Arabica type 6 registered an increase of 0,45%, closing at R$ 1.273,07/sc on the 31st.
