Brazil is expected to harvest, in 2023, the largest harvest in its history, with an estimated 309,9 million tons of grains being harvested, in an area of 76,7 million hectares. In Rondônia, production should be 3,3 million tons, in addition to almost three million 60 kg bags of processed coffee.

This and other information about agricultural production in the state, with national coverage, can be accessed in the tenth edition of the Rondônia Agricultural Newsletter, prepared by the Embrapa team. The publication brings data and analyzes on agricultural and livestock production, presents comparative data between the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 harvests, quarterly surveys of cattle and pig slaughter and milk and egg production, carried out and published by IBGE .

“The reader has at their disposal a set of information about the state's agriculture that is dispersed across several official data sources, allowing them to access data in an aggregated manner and with analysis. Furthermore, citing the sources consulted allows the reader to delve deeper into the subject, consulting them directly”, states the technical editor of the publication, Embrapa Rondônia analyst, Calixto Rosa Neto

Calixto explains that the data presented are obtained from secondary sources, such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the National Supply Company (Conab), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), Emater-RO, among others .

“In grain production, there has been a significant expansion of soybeans to all regions of the state, mainly occupying areas with degraded pastures. The estimate is that, in this harvest, around 500 thousand hectares were planted with this oilseed, with an estimated production of almost 1,7 million tons”, he comments.

Rice and other products

While rice production in Brazil is expected to decrease by 8,4%, in Rondônia the outlook is for a 6% increase in the quantity produced, going from 105,3 thousand tons in the 2021/2022 harvest to 111,6 thousand tons in the current harvest. In addition to increasing the planted area, the planting of more productive varieties should contribute to an increase in productivity, from 3.201 tons to 3.341 tons.

Second-crop corn should also see an increase in planted area, from 239,8 thousand hectares in the 2021/2022 harvest to 271,5 thousand hectares in the current harvest. Estimated production is 1.4 million tons, 12,2% higher than the previous harvest.

Biggest coffee harvest

Coffee is expected to reach the state's largest harvest ever, with estimates of 2,9 million 60 kg bags being harvested, with an average productivity of 45,3 bags per hectare. For Francisco de Assis Correa Silva, deputy head of Technology Transfer at Embrapa Rondônia, and member of the Informativo team, the evolution of coffee farming in Rondônia results from the process of crop renewal. “This is because seed-propagated plantations were replaced by more productive clonal varieties, as well as the adoption of appropriate practices for implementing and managing crops, with soil correction, fertilization, irrigation and control of pests and diseases”, he states.

Cassava and bananas, typical activities of family farming in the state, had their production reduced in 2022 compared to 2021. In the case of cassava, 401,8 thousand tons of roots were produced, while the quantity of bananas produced was 81,6 thousand tons.

In state livestock production, the highlight was the slaughter of cattle, of two million heads, with a carcass weight of 545 thousand tons of meat, 8,1% more than that obtained in the same period of 2021.

The Gross Value of Agricultural Production in Rondônia (VBP) in 2023 is estimated at almost 21 billion reais, practically stable in relation to what was estimated in 2022, although slightly lower.

Beef, soybean and corn exports in 2022 generated revenues of US$868,2 million, US$1,025 billion and US$174,4 million, respectively. Both the monetary value and the volume of these three products exported in 2022 were higher than the numbers obtained in 2021. However, the variation in dollars exceeded that in volume, indicating an increase in prices in the period.
