According to the 5th Survey of the 2017/2018 Grain Harvest, released by the National Supply Company (Conab), grain production for the 2017/2018 harvest could reach 225,6 million tons. This year's harvest should come in second place, even with a 5,1% decline compared to the last harvest, which was the largest in history (237,7 million tons).

With growth of more than 0,2%, the total area exceeded 61 million hectares. Among crops, the producer's preference is for corn and soybeans, which represent almost 88% of the grains produced in the country. In the case of soybeans, there was a 2,2% drop in production, which stood at 111,6 million tons compared to 114,1 million in the last period. For total corn, the expectation is for a reduction of 10,1%, from 97,8 million to 88 million tons.

The study also reveals that the most favorable scenario was for cotton, with a 17% increase in lint production, totaling 1,79 million tons and 1,1 million hectares, with an increase of 17,4% in the area. This increase, together with that of soybeans, favored the expansion of the total planted area. With greater liquidity and the possibility of better profitability compared to other crops, legumes tend to increase by an average of 3,3%, reaching 35 million hectares.
