The occurrence of six species of scale insects was recorded, for the first time, in the region
In the 2024 harvest, Goiás produced more than 234 thousand tons of wheat, in an area of 110 thousand hectares, according to a survey by the National Supply Company (Conab). Used in the production of bread and pasta, and also in animal feed, the grain had a productivity of 2,1 tons/hectare in the last harvest in Goiás.
The numbers place the state in a prominent regional position, with 75,7% of the quantity produced in the Center-West, in addition to consolidating it as the largest producer of wheat outside the South and Southeast regions, where mild temperatures, more commonly associated with this crop, favor its cultivation.
Thus, although the climatic conditions of the Cerrado are not considered ideal for growing wheat, this crop has seen significant success in Goiás, overcoming the challenges caused by the region's high temperatures.
As explained by the head of the State Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa), Pedro Leonardo Rezende, this expansion occurs especially through research and development of cultivars with greater potential for adaptation and yield, with the use of dryland and irrigated systems under central pivots.
“Combined with the use of cutting-edge irrigation technologies, growing domestic demand and price dynamics make wheat an extremely attractive option for diversification and increasing the income of Goiás producers,” he explains.
He also highlights that the Government of Goiás' continued support for agribusiness is fundamental for the expansion of production not only of wheat, but also of other crops, such as soybeans, corn, sorghum, among others.
“Investments in research, technological innovation and support for agricultural practices not only increase the state’s competitiveness in the national market, but also strengthen its role as a protagonist in Brazilian agribusiness,” he concludes.
