The Goiás grain harvest is expected to reach 33 million tons in the 2024/2025 harvest, representing an increase of 11,4% compared to the 2023/2024 harvest. This is what the first survey for the period released this week by the National Supply Company (Conab) indicates. According to the agency, with the result, Goiás should maintain the fourth position in the national ranking of largest producers.

In addition to the estimated increase in production, there are also positive prospects for productivity and planted area. According to Conab, the average yield per hectare in the state is expected to increase by 7,4% compared to the last harvest. The planted area is expected to grow by 3,8%, surpassing the mark of 7 million hectares cultivated with grains.

The numbers are driven by the increase in state production of rice (19,6%), corn (12,7%), soybeans (11,8%), sunflowers (11,4%) and beans (3,7%). Meanwhile, cotton and cottonseed (-8,5%), wheat (-12,1) and sorghum (-0,2%) crops are expected to decline.

The 1st Survey of the 2024/25 Grain Harvest by Conab also projects that soybean production in Goiás will exceed 18 million tons, with a significant increase in crop productivity, which should reach 3,8 tons per hectare, 9,1% higher than the previous harvest. Other productivity highlights are sunflower, with an increase of 11,4%, and corn, with 4,3%.

Rice, whose production increase is the largest among grain crops, shows a 24% growth in the area planted in the state, resulting in an estimated production of 155 thousand tons.

The 2024/2025 harvest began with the planting of the first crops after the end of the sanitary vacuum period, at the end of September. For Secretary Pedro Leonardo Rezende, head of the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa), the outlook is positive and consolidates Goiás' prominent position in agribusiness.

“Despite the climate challenges faced last year, we ended the 2023/2024 harvest as the fourth largest grain producer in Brazil, and we will continue working to strengthen the sector, through public policies, modern technologies and access to credit for rural producers, which are essential factors for our success”, declares the secretary.

Method

The methods used by Conab in the grain harvest survey process involve research and direct contact with several registered informants throughout the country; the use of agrometeorological and spectral monitoring (maps and vegetation conditions); knowledge of information on technological packages adopted by producers; systematic monitoring of meteorology; and the use of statistical methods to consolidate the information made available to the target audience.
