"Brazil is a major global locomotive that uses fossil fuel. And with that it has two major challenges: reducing consumption and investing in decarbonization." The assessment of the FAO Representative in Brazil, Rafael Zavala, calls for new forms of production, which can offer food on a large scale, affecting the environment as little as possible.
According to him, the war between Russia and Ukraine shows that Brazil's dependence on Brazil is increasingly clear, and as the country is a major food exporter, it must accelerate investment in renewable energy, especially sugar cane. .
In this sense, Marcos Landell, who is director and scientific researcher at IAC (Agronomic Institute of Campinas), points out that a lot has already been done over the decades, but waste, such as vinasse, for example, has not always been reused.
It was precisely technology that allowed this advancement. "Over the last 40 years there has been an impressive evolution in relation to sustainability. Such as the reduction in burning in sugarcane fields, the use of raw sugarcane, the use of fertilizers and organic matter that improve productivity and reduce dependence on inputs", highlights Landell.
And as changes happen all the time, State policies need to keep up. Regarding this, USP Physics professor, Paulo Artaxo, recalls that global climate agreements are examples that should be prioritized. “The planet will reach 1.5 degrees of global warming in 2026. Problems are accelerating, with extreme weather events. And actions are not keeping up with the urgent need to reduce gas emissions”, he warns.
Focusing on sustainability actions is an urgent task and rich in opportunities, as understood by Luis Roberto Pogetti, Chairman of Coopersucar and Honorary President of Fenasucro & Agrocana. “Consumers are willing to pay more for a product that harms the environment less. And the sector actually has the capacity to deliver this, with cheaper production in the long term and alignment with the external market”, he considers.
These and other topics are part of the Agrobusiness Summit, an online event from TRENDS 2.0 -- Fenasucro & Agrocana's content generation platform -, which will also bring together other renowned experts such as Antônio Tonielo (COPERCANA); Francis Queen (VP of ethanol, sugar and electricity Raízen); among others, on June 07th and 08th. The lectures will take place at 10am and 16pm.
The objective is to offer the public access to the various aspects of agricultural production, without neglecting attention to natural resources and the need for innovations.
The panels will be mediated by the director of Fenasucro & Agrocana, Paulo Montabone, who adds the importance of renewable energy for large-scale production. "The planet demands good actions from us, because we need to produce for the next generations. We need to think about the future and Brazil has the technology and capacity, through sugar cane, to largely meet global demands and challenges that are emerging across the world sector", he explains.
The Agrobusiness Summit agenda can be seen on the Fenasucro & Agrocana website, using this link. Registration is still open and can be done free of charge.
