The FieldDataSync project, funded by the German government, was the grand winner of the prestigious DLG Agrifuture Concept Award 2025. This innovative initiative promises to transform agribusiness by solving a critical global challenge: real-time communication and coordination between agricultural machinery from different manufacturers.

In Europe, the presence of mixed fleets (equipment from various brands) is the norm, but it also creates bottlenecks in communication and operational efficiency. To solve this, FieldDataSync, in partnership with industry giants such as Claas and Fendt – a German manufacturer of agricultural machinery and implements belonging to the AGCO group – has developed an open wireless communication interface (via Wi-Fi). This technology allows tractors and harvesters from different manufacturers to operate together in a coordinated manner in a "platoon" system (automated grouping).

Initial tests in northern Germany have already demonstrated the synchronization: the machines coordinate their driving and work strategies in real time, reacting dynamically to field conditions. The main objective is to optimize agricultural processes, ensuring greater productivity and safety in the field, which led the award jury to describe FieldDataSync as "an important step towards fully autonomous agricultural operations".

The results of FieldDataSync will have a direct impact on international standardization. The project's findings will serve as a basis for future guidelines from the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF), an international organization working to ensure interoperability and standardization, primarily via ISO bus. Furthermore, future project plans include integrating advanced diagnostic and safety features and expanding the concept to even larger vehicle fleets.

The success of the initiative is a milestone in the pursuit of open and digital agriculture. "We have achieved a real breakthrough by grouping tractors from different manufacturers. We are demonstrating that digital collaboration between different systems is possible. This is a crucial step towards open agriculture and the easy exchange of data," says Tobias Nothdurft, Manager of Research and Advanced Engineering for Premium Tractors at Fendt.

The DLG Agrifuture Concept Award, granted by the DLG (German Agricultural Society), recognizes visionary concepts and projects in agricultural technology with the potential to revolutionize the future of agriculture in the next five to ten years.
