BRS F63 Camila, a new potato cultivar developed by Embrapa's Potato Genetic Improvement Program, will be presented to rural producers in the southeast region of the state of São Paulo in a field day to be held on July 25th, leaving at 8am from Gran Safra Ceeais, located on Rodovia Vicente Botta (SP 267), 2376, in Vargem Grande do Sul (SP). AGROSEM (Sociedade Cooperativa União Agrícola Canoinhas), a company licensed by Embrapa, is making a batch of two thousand boxes of seeds available to potato producers. In addition to the presentation to producers, Embrapa will promote the BRS F63 Camila potato to wholesalers from Ceasa de Campinas (SP) and Ceagesp, in São Paulo (SP), on the 24th and 26th of July respectively.

Launched in March 2015, the BRS F63 Camila potato is the result of 11 years of research by Embrapa Clima Temperado (Pelotas - RS), Embrapa Hortaliças (Brasília - DF) and Embrapa's Secretariat for Innovation and Business. The BRS F63 Camila potato cultivar has the distinguishing features of resistance to virus Y, a disease that causes seed degeneration and reduces the productivity and quality of crops. With this resistance, the cultivar guarantees a greater number of seed multiplications, becoming cheaper and of better quality. In addition to a high yield of tubers with commercial characteristics, and because it has a higher dry matter content, it provides a longer shelf life of the tubers after harvesting.

Cuisine

The BRS F63 Camila is versatile in cooking, having been developed to meet the growing demands of Brazilian consumers. It is used for cooking and after cooking, it has a firm texture. In sensory analyses, it presented a different flavor and, therefore, is also recommended for specialized cuisine. "The expectation is that it will meet the demands of the producer and satisfy the consumer", explains Embrapa researcher Arione Pereira, leader of Embrapa's Potato Genetic Improvement Program.

Performance

The BRS F63 Camila has good tuber appearance, and in terms of tuber yield "it is up to 10 to 20% higher than the main competitor on the market", estimates the analyst from the Secretariat of Innovation and Business, Antônio Bortoletto, having based on the evaluations of producers who are testing the cultivar.

Potatoes have smooth yellow skin, oval shape, with shallow eyes, and light yellow flesh. It also has a medium dormancy period and vegetative cycle. The new cultivar is recommended for planting in the southern region of the country and in colder seasons in other producing regions.
