The Fendt 900 Vario series will reach the milestone of 50 units produced in July 2026. It will also mark 30 years of worldwide use. To commemorate both dates, Fendt will launch a special edition limited to 300 units.
The commemorative edition will feature a paint job inspired by the 2005 Fendt Design Line. The package will also include chrome elements. Buyers will be able to choose between the colors Black, Steel Blue, Fir Green, Black Red, and Nature Green. The tractor will feature an engraved sill plate, embroidered floor mat with the anniversary logo, a hood emblem, and a SuperComfort seat in Titanium leather with an embroidered headrest.
Fendt will be showcasing the model at trade fairs and events in the coming months. One of the presentations will take place at EIMA, the agricultural machinery trade fair in Bologna, Italy, from November 11 to 14.
The series' trajectory began in 1996 with the Fendt Favorit 926 Vario. This tractor introduced the Vario transmission, a continuously variable transmission with power splitting. This solution eliminated fixed gear ratios. The operator could now control both engine speed and transmission using the same control unit. In DLG's test, the model recorded fuel consumption below 200 grams per kilowatt-hour at the power take-off, at maximum power.
In 1999, the line received a new exterior design and incorporated electronic fuel injection. The update also brought the first Vario Terminal. The Variotronic system allowed control of functions such as hydraulic valves and speed memory. The joystick now had four buttons for automatic lift and power take-off functions. Fendt reports that this set of buttons remains present in the brand's tractors.
The second generation arrived in 2003 with the Tractor Management System. The TMS connects the engine and transmission via electronic control. The system adjusts the rotation according to the power demand. The operator began to control the Vario transmission and engine using the drive lever. This generation also introduced Variotronic Teach-In, a feature to program up to 16 work steps in headland maneuvers.
In 2005, Fendt presented the Fendt 936 Vario at Agritechnica. The model began using a 360-horsepower Deutz engine. It also received independent wheel suspension, a new cab, and Power and Profi packages. The version reached a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour. At the same event, the brand showed a black Fendt 900 Vario, later dubbed the "Black Madonna" by the industry. The presentation marked the beginning of the Design Line.
The fourth generation, from 2010, increased the maximum power to 390 horsepower in the Fendt 939 Vario, with a 7,8-liter Deutz engine. The line received VarioGrip, an integrated tire pressure control system. In the field, lower pressure reduces compaction and increases the contact area with the soil. On the road, higher pressure reduces rolling resistance, fuel consumption, and tire wear. This generation also incorporated ABS for tractors.
In 2013, the fifth generation received a new Deutz engine, steel pistons, two turbochargers, and an additional intercooler. Fendt also redesigned the engine and transmission cooling system. A reversible fan became an option. The 300-degree windshield wiper improved operator visibility.
The sixth generation appeared in 2019 with VarioDrive. The powertrain eliminated the need to switch between off-road and on-road driving modes. The system combined the Fendt Vario TA 300 transmission with a MAN engine. In the Fendt 942 Vario, the 9,0-liter engine delivers a maximum power of 415 horsepower. Fendt also increased the maximum diameter of the rear tires to 2,20 meters.
The line received FendtONE in 2021. The platform integrated the office and cab. The manager can plan operations on the computer and send tasks to the tractor wirelessly. Documentation is generated with the push of a button. In the cab, the 3L joystick allows assigning up to 27 functions across three levels, including for ISOBUS-compatible implements. Tractor-Implement Management adjusts the speed according to the implement load.
Fendt reports that the 900 Vario series served as the basis for technologies such as Vario Terminal, VarioGrip, and ABS for tractors. The company also highlights the line's results in DLG PowerMix tests and its contribution to the brand's growth in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
