An extratropical cyclone is expected to bring strong winds and storms to a wide swath of the country this Wednesday (April 8), according to a forecast by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The area of instability extends from southern Mato Grosso do Sul to the Southern Region.

The phenomenon is affecting the border region between Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul and originated from the so-called Chaco Low, a low-pressure system that frequently occurs over Paraguay. On Tuesday (April 7), the low-pressure center was already close to the border, while the associated cold front advanced through the interior of the continent.

Throughout the day, the core of the cyclone should remain close to the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, favoring the intensification of winds, especially along the coast. Gusts may exceed 100 km/h in some areas.

The Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a high-danger warning for strong winds along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, encompassing 25 municipalities, including Porto Alegre. There is a risk of roof damage, falling trees, power outages, and impacts on agricultural areas.

Drop in temperature and risk of frost.

After the passage of the cold front, starting on Thursday (9), a mass of cold air should advance over the Southern Region, causing a drop in temperatures, especially in the north of Rio Grande do Sul and in Santa Catarina.

The forecast indicates stable weather for the rest of the week, with the possibility of frost in the mountainous areas of both states on Friday (10).
