External and internal prices of Arabica coffee rose sharply in September, especially in the second fortnight. According to Cepea researchers, the impulse came from concerns about global supply.

The smaller harvest in Brazil in 21/22 and the impacts of the weather on production in 22/23 have left agents on alert regarding the balance between supply and demand in 2021 and 2022.

Last month, the CEPEA/ESALQ Indicator for type 6 Arabica, placed in the capital of São Paulo, operated for several days above R$ 1.100/60 kg bag, reaching, on the 28th, the highest real daily level since January 12, 2012 , closing at R$ 1.146,61/bag (values deflated by the IGP-DI of Aug/21). From August 31st to September 30th, the increase was 52,71 Reais per bag (+4,8%).

For Robusta, prices also had a significant increase in September. The CEPEA/ESALQ Indicator type 6 sieve 13 above closed the 30th at R$ 825,86/sc, an increase of 134,85 Reais per bag (+19,5%) in relation to the end of August. This was the highest real closing since January 19, 2017 (daily values deflated by the IGP-DI of Aug/21).

According to Cepea researchers, the variety's prices were driven by external gains, greater national demand and sales retraction. In the national spot, most sellers were withdrawn, while demand remained firm, which made it difficult to close deals in the country.
