Issue 290 of Cultivar Grandes Culturas magazine brings included a special Technical Notebook on target spot, a disease that comes growing in soybean crops with each harvest and which is also increasing in cotton culture. The content is also available in e-book format, for can be read online or downloaded for free on the Revista Cultivar website. O material, produced by Proteplan researchers, from Mato Grosso, has the exclusive support from BASF.
The e-book shows that, even though Asian rust is the nightmare for many soybean farmers, it is important to highlight that other diseases can considerably reduce the productivity of soybean crops. The target spot (caused by Corynespora cassiicola) is an example.
Believe me, but there was a period, about 15, 20 years ago, when There were doubts about the ability of this disease to cause economic losses in soybeans. Today, target spot is the main crop disease in the Midwest and in part of the Southeast and South.
Target spot damage varies depending on the severity of the disease, which is closely related to the susceptibility of soybean cultivars. At evaluation of 72 of them, in the South, Middle North and West regions of Mato Grosso, in 2021/22 harvest, the reduction in soybean productivity, exclusively due to target spot, ranged from 9 to 21%. In the same 2021/22 harvest, in trials cooperatives, three to four applications of fungicides to control target spot generated differences of up to 1.047 kg/ha (MS), 1.339 kg/ha (GO) and 1.362 kg/ha (MT). The data speaks for itself.
