Evonik reports that it has won two patent disputes and maintained legal protection for its three-stage biogas purification process using Sepuran Green membranes in Europe and the United States. The decisions came from the European Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Both rejected invalidation requests filed by third parties.

The European Patent Office confirmed the validity of patent EP3240620 B1. The US agency upheld patent US 10,471,380 B2. The decisions were made in final appeals, with no possibility of review, according to the company.

With this result, Evonik reinforces the exclusivity of its three-stage process for biogas upgrading. The technology uses Sepuran Green membranes and allows for the efficient separation of biomethane and carbon dioxide. The system eliminates the need for a second compressor. This configuration reduces energy consumption and operating costs, according to the company.

The company reports that the process meets various demands of the biogas market. These include low-pressure operations, projects sensitive to initial investment, biomethane production with low CO2 content, and reduction of methane losses.
