The European Union's demand for fruit from outside the bloc grew by a significant 37% between 2011 and 2021, according to information from the Trade Helpdesk. From 2020 to 2021, specifically, the increase was limited to 1,6%. Brazilian shipments to the European Union increased by a significant 51,3% in the last 10 years and 13,7% in 2021 compared to 2020, highlighting the importance of this market to the national export sector.

Between 2011 and 2021, the European Union increased external purchases of practically all fruits analyzed by Hortifruti/Cepea – the exception being apples – and, in some cases, such as mangoes, limes and watermelon, the increase in imports from the bloc was above 70% during this period.

In the specific case of Brazilian shipments to the European Union, in 10 years, there was a drop in shipments of only apples and bananas, which, in turn, is due to great international competition. It should be noted, however, that the European bloc is not the main Brazilian destination for these fruits.

Among the highlights of the growth in Brazilian shipments to the European bloc are watermelon (the volume exported more than tripled in 10 years), mango and lime (the quantities of these fruits shipped doubled). Papaya also stands out, with shipments to the European Union increasing by 90% between 2011 and 2021.

In addition to investments in national production, the presence of few competitors – in the cases of papaya and lime – and continuous supply throughout the year and adapted to the main market windows favor the Brazilian export sector. It should also be noted that most of these fruits are considered exotic by foreigners and have low production in Europe.
