Europe consumes 52 million bags of coffee per year, which corresponds to 32% of world consumption

Asia and Oceania consume 36 million bags of coffee, North America - 30,3 million, South America - 27 million, Africa - 11,4 million, and Central America and Mexico, 5,3 million

World coffee consumption in 2017 was estimated at 162,232 million bags, a volume that represents growth of 1,8% compared to 2016, which was 159,392 million 60kg bags. Europe, which is the largest coffee consuming bloc in the world, was responsible for the consumption of 52,322 million bags in 2017, that is, 32,25% of the world's total. That year, consumption in Asia and Oceania was 35,8 million bags (22,13%), followed by North America - with 30,3 million bags (18,7%), South America - 27 million of bags (16,65%); Africa - 11,4 million bags (7,02%), and, finally, Central America and Mexico, with 5,3 million bags, which correspond to 3,25% of world consumption.

In the context of global coffee consumption, it is worth highlighting that Brazil, the largest producer and exporter, sells around 60% of its harvest abroad annually. In this case, in relation to Brazilian Coffee exports, exclusively in the period from January to October of this year 2018, 14,987 million 60kg bags were destined for Europe, the main global consumer bloc, which represented 54% of Brazilian exports in the period highlighted.

In the ranking of economic blocks/continents, North America, in second place, in the same period, imported 5,711 million bags of Brazilian Coffees, being responsible for 21% of acquisitions. To Asia, third in this ranking, 5,001 million bags of coffee were exported (18%), and, subsequently, to South America, Africa, Oceania and Central America, respectively, 1,069 million bags were exported, 339 thousand bags, 293 thousand bags and 102 thousand bags, which corresponded to around 4%, 1%, 1% and 0,4% of exports, which totaled 27,501 million bags and generated US$4,043 billion in the first ten months of 2018 .

These data and figures on the performance of world coffee consumption in 2017 and Brazilian Coffee exports in the first ten months of 2018, now highlighted, among other relevant data from the sector, are included in the Monthly report October 2018of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council - Cecafe, which is available in full on Coffee Observatory of the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café.

Specifically in relation to the month of October this year, Brazilian exports registered a monthly record with a volume of 3,746 million bags, of which 3,091 million were Arabica coffee (82,5%), 364,715 thousand bags of Robusta coffee (9,7%) , 288,913 thousand bags of soluble coffee (7,7%) and 2,029 thousand bags of roasted and ground coffee (0,1%). Coffees from Brazil were exported at an average price of US$ 130,86 per bag that month, totaling US$ 490,289 million in foreign exchange revenue for our country.
