Embrapa takes technology to soybean crops in the Northeast of Pará

Two soybean cultivars with high potential for protection against the main soybean caterpillars will be presented by Embrapa at Agroshow Coopernorte 2018. The Company's specialists will also demonstrate in practice how to identify pests and diseases in crops. The event takes place on the 17th, 18th and 19th of May, in Paragominas (PA).

Among the advantages of the cultivars in relation to those currently used by producers are, in addition to the high potential for grain yield and production stability, protection against the soybean caterpillar, the false caterpillar, the pointer borer, and others.

The Paragominas region is at the beginning of the soybean harvest. Last harvest, the municipality produced just over 300 thousand tons of soybeans, being the largest producer in Pará. The expectation for this year's harvest in the State, according to IBGE, is around 1 million and 600 thousand tons. Pará is the second largest producer in the Northern Region, behind Tocantins, which is expected to produce almost 2 million and 500 thousand tons.

According to researcher Jamil El Husny, coordinator of the Embrapa office in Paragominas, the planting of Embrapa materials in producer areas brought promising results, “it is an excellent crop option that brings security and sustainability to the farmer in Paragominas, whether he is large, medium or small”, he adds. The researcher highlights that the yield of Embrapa material in crops is around 4 tons per hectare, while the average yield in the municipality is around 3 tons per hectare.

In addition to soybeans, Embrapa will exhibit materials from cowpea, corn, sorghum and sunflower, tested and validated for the Paragominas region, at the Agroshow Coopernorte technological showcase.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Disease Management (MID)

On the 18th and 19th, at 9am, at the Agroshow Coopernorte technology showcase, Embrapa experts will demonstrate “cloth beating”, which is the technique for identifying pests and natural enemies in soybean plantations.

O Integrated Soybean Pest Management is a set of techniques for the efficient management of pests that attack crops. The benefits of MIP are numerous, including reducing production costs; reducing the use of pesticides; reducing environmental impact; and improvement in grain production and quality.

The practical activity also includes demonstrating how to identify the main diseases that affect soybean crops. To minimize the problem, Integrated Disease Management in Soybeans recommends a series of control actions, which are simple and accessible to the producer, enabling economic coexistence with diseases and avoiding production losses. The actions involve crop rotation, choice of cultivar, use of certified seeds, soil care, among others.

The Company's experts will be available to visitors and interested producers at the Embrapa stand, on the three days of Agroshow Coopernorte 2018, from 8am to 18pm. The Fair will be held in the Experiment Area, Silo Coopernorte, located at BR 010, km 15, in Paragominas/PA.
