Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology promotes, from February 22nd to March 05th, 2016, the course “Uses and applications of molecular markers in genetics and population genomics, phylogeny and molecular taxonomy”. The objective is to train professionals, researchers and postgraduate students in the analysis of genetic data, aiming to explore theoretical and practical aspects of genetic and genomic analysis for conservation, taxonomy and molecular phylogeny.

Population genomics can be broadly defined as a study that enables a better understanding of evolutionary processes. Understanding the processes involved in the diversification of lineages and the emergence of new species is particularly important in regions considered biodiversity hotspots, such as Brazil.

Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology has expertise in the area of molecular characterization of plants, consolidated for more than four decades. According to the course coordinator, researcher Vânia Azevedo, molecular genetic knowledge of plants is fundamental to developing more efficient conservation methodologies, in addition to generating biological information to guarantee the productive sustainability of plant genetic resources.

“Genetic studies lead to a growing understanding of the biology of plant species, which is crucial for defining more efficient actions towards the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources in the long term”, highlights the researcher.

The course will offer practical and theoretical knowledge to professionals, researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of Biology, Agronomy, Forestry Engineering, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Veterinary and Animal Science.

The theoretical part will cover topics such as the history of molecular genetics, types and applications of molecular markers; Introduction to practice and laboratory: PCR and genotyping; Introduction to genotyping and data analysis; molecular markers in population genetics studies: genetic diversity, genetic structure and effective size, among others.

The practical classes will be held in the Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology laboratories in Brasília, DF, and will train participants in DNA extraction, quantification and dilution techniques; PCR reactions with markers for phylogeny and taxonomy; analysis and interpretation of phylogeny and taxonomy data (Clustalw, Blast, Paup, Sequencher), among other cutting-edge technologies.

Registration is available until February 10th at: www.embrapa.br/en/recursos-geneticos-e-biotecnologia/cursos/curso-usos-e-aplicacoes-de-marcadores-moleculares
