One of the main references in climate change in Brazil and in the world, the researcher Thelma Krug (In the photo) will be speaker at the Climate Dialogues event, to be held on August 6 in Porto Alegre (RS). Promoted by Embrapa, the Debate Circuit is traveling all Brazilian biomes in preparation for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30). In its fifth edition, the initiative hits the South, Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes, with the objective of expanding and deepening public debate about climate change.
Retired researcher at the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), Thelma Krug coordinates the Scientific Council on Climate, a technical group that will advise the presidency of COP30, as well as chair the Director Committee of the Global Climate Observation System (GCOS). The scientist was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) for over 20 years, where she occupied the vice presidency from 2015 to 2023.
Krug will deliver the opening keynote address for the Climate Dialogues. Representatives from government agencies, scientific institutions, universities, public and private companies, opinion leaders, and other leaders will also discuss the most appropriate solutions for the Pampas and other biomes in the Southern region.
Embrapa President Silvia Massruhá is hosting the event and will discuss cooperation between the government, science and technology institutions, the production sector, international organizations, and civil society in the Climate Journey and Climate Dialogues.
Then there will be technical presentations and roundtables. In the morning, the discussion will be about the challenges imposed by climate change in the southern region, with agriculture, livestock, bioeconomic and forest sector debaters. In the afternoon, the theme will be the role of science, with debaters who will talk about extreme events such as droughts and floods, food security and conservation agriculture.
The meeting will be held in person, with registration available on the E3sys event website (https://e3sys.com.br/dialogos/). Activities begin at 9:XNUMX a.m.
The climate dialogues will occur in the six Brazilian biomes, and the different contributions will be consolidated in a synthesis document to be delivered at the end of the circuit to the ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30. The intention is for contributions to subsidize the formulation of public policies and support Brazilian negotiators during the conference, to be held from November 11 to 20 in Belém (PA).
Events have already been held in the Cerrado, Pantanal and Amazon biomes.
The circuit of events is part of the Journey for Climate, a large-scale Embrapa project that highlights science in Brazilian agriculture as an essential pillar for sustainable transformation.
The Journey for the Climate has the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service - Sebrae as an institutional partner, and as sponsors the National Rural Learning Service - Senar (Patrocínio Master), Nestlé (Diamond and Gold Sponsorship), the Inter -American Institute for Agriculture - IICA and Bayer (Diamond Sponsorship), Caixa Econômica Federal and Local Biome), Banco da Amazônia) (Sponsorship Local Biome), Morfo (Sponsorship Vitrine) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sponsorship Biomes).
