Unraveling the complex process of dormancy and genetics of apple flowering and working at the frontier of knowledge is the focus of the technical cooperation agreement signed between the general head of Embrapa Uva e Vinho, José Fernando Protas, and the presidents of two important institutions of the France: the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE), Phillipe Mauguin, and the National Institute of Higher Agronomic Studies of Montpellier (Montpellier SupAgro), Anne-Lucie Wack.
The act is yet another instrument that reinforces the partnership between Embrapa teams and French institutions in the DormAp project (SEG 12.15.12.001.00.00) and in the memorandum of understanding signed in May 2018. The agreement, called LIA (Laboratoire International Associé), could open doors to other projects and collaborations between the three organizations, under the leadership of researchers Luís Fernando Revers (Embrapa) and Evelyne Costes (INRAE).

According to the coordinator of Labex Europe, Vinícius Guimarães, the signing of the partnership reinforces the history of cooperation, especially with INRAE, whose structure is more similar to that of Embrapa. “Labex’s presence in France has contributed greatly to this strengthening,” he said. Regarding cooperation for the LIA, Guimarães remembers that the teams were already in contact when Labex Europa was called in to contribute to the negotiations that resulted in the signing of the agreement.
“There were requirements to be met by the institutions and, despite there being no provision for resources, the cooperation agreement establishes common objectives for the study of apple culture and mainly explains the search for sources of financing by the institutions involved”, he commented. For the Labex coordinator, everyone's commitment to seeking financing will increase the chances of success. “We will be able to invest on several fronts in different countries.”
