In the week of September 27th to 30th, Embrapa Trigo promotes CerealTec – Technological Week in Winter Cereals. The event will divide the public into interest groups, with programming focused on the themes of milk, forage, feed, seed production, cereal growers, technical assistance and resales.

According to the Head of Technology Transfer at Embrapa Trigo, Giovani Faé, the program aims to serve different research partners and includes a series of actions that are being developed to take knowledge to rural producers: “In the search for winter optimization , we are working to disseminate strategies for better profitability in the cultivation of winter cereals, pointing out market alternatives for both human and animal nutrition”.

Opportunities in animal feed

The production of winter cereals in Brazil has always been focused on human consumption, such as wheat for baking or barley for malting. Common black oat is the exception, traditionally used for winter forage production or ground cover.

However, the scarcity of corn and the growing demand for forage to meet the production of meat, eggs and milk are opening space for an increase in the area under cultivation with winter cereals. “Research has invested in genetics capable of offering a greater supply of forage and grains with a higher protein content. Today we have wheat that allows up to 14 grazing cycles in livestock farming. In feeding pigs and poultry, barley, wheat and triticale grains with more protein, which can replace corn in the feed. Silage of excellent quality and lower cost can be produced in winter. These are the results that we will show at CerealTec”, explains the general manager of Embrapa Trigo, Jorge Lemainski, remembering that the event will be an opportunity to exchange experiences and broaden horizons on winter cultivation.

CerealTec will also present launches and cultivars at pre-commercial level in oats, wheat, triticale, barley and soybeans.

The complete program is available on the website Embrapa Wheat, with the possibility of pre-registration on the topic of interest. CerealTec is in partnership with Embrapa Swine and Poultry, with the support of Sulpasto, ACERGS, Emater/RS, CCGL-RTC, Apassul, Unicafes, ABPA, Senar-RS and Farsul. The event will be held in any weather at the Embrapa Trigo technology showcase, in Passo Fundo, RS, on the banks of BR 285, km 294. Information by calling 54-3316-5800.
