Profile

Embrapa Soja is one of the 42 research units of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa). It currently has 274 employees working in Londrina (PR) and in advanced bases in different Brazilian regions who work with actions to manage culture in regionalized production systems, in the development of the genetic base and in mapping research demands.

Embrapa Soja is located on a 350-hectare experimental farm, in the Warta district, in Londrina. The Company maintains a complex research infrastructure, 36.756 m2 of built area, divided into 38 greenhouses, 30 laboratories, an auditorium complex and administrative buildings. In addition to this structure, Embrapa Soja has Fazenda Maravilha, located in the Maravilha District, 35 km from the center of Londrina, with 121 hectares.

History

Founded on April 16, 1975, with the aim of developing technologies for soybean production in Brazil, it has become a global reference in research for soybean cultivation in tropical regions. Until 1970, commercial soybean plantations in the world were restricted to regions with temperate and sub-tropical climates, whose latitudes were close to or greater than 30º. Embrapa Soja researchers broke this barrier, developing varieties adapted to tropical conditions with low latitudes, allowing the cultivation of the oilseed throughout the Brazilian territory. Its historic contribution to soybean agribusiness in Brazil places the research center as a global reference in the development of technologies for cultivation in tropical regions.

Contribution

Among its contributions are biological pest control, soil management and conservation techniques, pest, disease and weed management, among others. Embrapa Soja has intensified research that is at the forefront of knowledge, such as innovations in biotechnology and genome editing techniques. The use of advanced technological tools allows new solutions to help Brazilian agriculture maintain its competitiveness. Furthermore, Embrapa Soja has been investing heavily in digital agriculture and the bioeconomy. Recently, the Unit's Soil Biotechnology laboratory received ISO 17025:2017 accreditation, and becomes the first public laboratory accredited for inoculant analysis.

Sunflower and wheat

Embrapa Soja is also responsible for sunflower research for the entire national territory and for wheat research, developed in partnership with Embrapa Trigo (Passo Fundo - RS) and the Institute for Rural Development of Paraná (IDR- Paraná) for the Paraná.
