Between September 20 and November 20, 2025, all cotton crops in Minas Gerais must comply with the sanitary break. This measure prevents the presence of live plants in the reproductive stage in the field and aims to reduce the incidence of boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis). In irrigated areas located below 600 meters above sea level, the void will be between October 30th and December 30th.

During this period, producers must eliminate crop residue and stubble within 15 days of harvesting. This responsibility falls on whoever owns the land. Volunteer plants must also be removed to prevent pest outbreaks. Only research and genetic seed production areas, previously authorized and monitored by the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute (IMA), are exempt from this requirement.

The registration of production areas must be renewed each harvest and submitted within 60 days of planting. Those wishing to grow cotton during the sanitary break must request authorization from the IMA by April 30th, submitting a Simplified Work Plan, in accordance with Ordinance No. 1884/2018.

Inspections will be conducted on a sample basis, with on-site inspections and verification of complaints received through official channels. In case of noncompliance, the producer may be fined after notification and administrative proceedings.

Amipa (Minas Gerais Cotton Producers Association) reinforces preventive measures with its members, such as technical visits, reports, and the distribution of pheromone traps. With support from Proalminas, the organization also distributes boll weevil traps to contain the pest.

Agricultural engineer José Lusimar Eugênio recommends constant monitoring, alternating active ingredients, and immediate destruction of ratoons after harvest. Setting traps and applying insecticides between 9 a.m. and 16 p.m. complements control.
