Cotton harvest surpasses 88% in Mato Grosso

Cotton harvesting is progressing rapidly in Mato Grosso, reaching 88,66% of the cultivated area, according to data updated as of August 28th. With the hot and dry weather, the machines have gained speed in the state's main producing regions, bringing the harvest to its final stages.

Crop performance is also noteworthy. Field reports indicate productivity of 400 arrobas per hectare or more in some areas, while fiber yield in processing plants varies between 40% and 45%, considered positive by the sector.

However, the progress of the harvest increases producers' attention to the necessary care at this stage. With the cotton being removed from the fields, the Mato Grosso Cotton Producers Association (Ampa) advises intensifying the cleaning of the areas and the management of the cotton stubble, in addition to continuing the transport and processing of the bales.

Eliminating cotton stubble is considered an essential measure to prevent the plants from sprouting again and becoming a food source for the cotton boll weevil, one of the main pests threatening the crop. The insect continues to be identified in monitoring traps installed in producing regions.

Rain becomes a point of concern.

While dry weather has helped accelerate the harvest, the possibility of changing weather conditions calls for caution. Ampa warns of rainfall expected in the coming weeks, mainly because moisture at this time can stain the exposed fiber in the field, reduce its quality, and delay the removal of cotton from areas not yet harvested.

With over 88% of the area already harvested, the focus now is on completing fieldwork quickly, preserving fiber quality, and reducing the risk of pest infestation after the harvest is over.
